Today marks the 25th anniversary of World Book Day as children celebrates in over 100 countries, around the globe. World Book Day celebrates the importance and value of books and reading with this year’s theme as ‘YOU ARE A READER’. Children at school are encouraged to engage in reading in a fun way and to make it a part of their everyday habit.
In the UK for instance, children were asked to dress up in costumed of their favourite book character and you can see the excitement in their eyes as they ran to meet up with their mates whilst being dropped off. They shared with one another what book costume they were wearing. Then it occurred to me that in some parts of the globe, world book day isn’t being celebrated, not because they do not want to participate but because most are unaware of it, or some children are not opportune to participate in the celebrations as they are unable to be in school at this time due to a long string of issues ranging from poverty through to inadequate school infrastructures or absence of schools within their communities. These reasons amongst others are why Tardio has taken on the reins to do its own part to see that basic education is available to every child by making an impact in little communities to big cities
