Supporting children’s education, promoting inclusive learning and establishing lasting reading habits in Abia State, Nigeria.
TARDIO — Tardigrade International Organisation — has successfully completed its 2026 Back-to-School Outreach, reaching approximately 257 pupils across two primary schools in Abia State, Nigeria.
The initiative took place at Umuogele Mbato Primary School in Aba and Amawom Community Primary School in Ikwuano, Umuahia, providing educational materials to support children returning to school.
Beyond distributing learning materials, the outreach reflects TARDIO’s broader commitment to promoting basic education, encouraging children’s confidence and participation in learning, and nurturing a sustainable culture of reading.
At Umuogele Mbato Primary School, Aba, the organisation reached 130 pupils. A few days later, the initiative continued at Amawom Community Primary School, Ikwuano, Umuahia, where approximately 127 pupils benefited.
For TARDIO, these interventions represent more than charitable donations. They are practical steps towards helping children access the educational opportunities they deserve.
Supporting Children at the Beginning of a New School Term
For many families, the beginning of a new academic term brings considerable financial pressure.
Essential educational materials — including exercise books, writing materials, school bags and other learning resources — can become difficult to afford when households are managing several competing financial responsibilities.
For children from disadvantaged backgrounds, the absence of these basic materials can affect their preparedness, confidence and ability to participate fully in classroom activities.
TARDIO’s Back-to-School Outreach seeks to address some of these challenges by providing practical educational support where it is needed.
The organisation believes that every child deserves the opportunity to begin the school term with dignity, confidence and the basic resources necessary for learning.
Although educational materials alone cannot resolve every challenge affecting access to quality education, they can make a meaningful difference in a child’s immediate learning experience.
Inclusive Education: Every Child Deserves an Opportunity
An important aspect of the outreach at Amawom Community Primary School was the inclusion of children with disabilities, who also received educational materials.
This reflected TARDIO’s belief that disability should never become a reason for a child to be excluded from educational opportunities.
Every child, regardless of physical ability or personal circumstances, deserves the opportunity to learn, develop confidence, discover their potential and participate meaningfully in school life.
Inclusive education requires more than recognising that children have different needs. It requires deliberate efforts to ensure that those needs are considered when educational programmes are planned and implemented.
The experience at Amawom reinforced TARDIO’s commitment to making the inclusion of children with disabilities an intentional part of its future educational interventions.
Education should create opportunities for every child, not reinforce the barriers that some children already face.
Approximately 257 Pupils Reached Across Two Schools
The 2026 Back-to-School Outreach reached approximately 257 pupils across two locations in Abia State.
The programme’s reported reach was:
- Umuogele Mbato Primary School, Aba: 130 pupils.
- Amawom Community Primary School, Ikwuano, Umuahia: Approximately 127 pupils.
- Total: Approximately 257 pupils.
These figures provide an important measure of the programme’s immediate reach.
However, TARDIO recognises that behind every number is an individual child with personal aspirations, abilities and educational needs.
The organisation’s work is therefore not defined solely by the number of children reached, but also by the opportunities its interventions can help create.
Providing educational materials addresses an immediate need.
Sustaining a child’s interest in learning requires continued encouragement, meaningful engagement and access to opportunities that support educational development.
This understanding is helping to shape the next phase of TARDIO’s work.
From Educational Materials to Building a Culture of Reading
While the Back-to-School Outreach focuses on helping children access essential learning materials, TARDIO is also working to strengthen children’s reading habits through its TARDIO Book Club initiative.
The organisation has already been running a Book Club programme in Umuahia, creating opportunities for children to engage with books beyond regular classroom instruction.
Building on this experience, TARDIO is preparing to expand the initiative.
Three schools have indicated their readiness to establish TARDIO Book Clubs during the first term of the academic year.
This development represents an encouraging step towards building a more sustained relationship between children and reading.
The TARDIO Book Club initiative is designed to encourage:
- Regular reading: Helping children develop consistent reading habits.
- Reading comprehension: Encouraging children to understand and interpret what they read.
- Curiosity and imagination: Creating opportunities to explore ideas, stories and knowledge.
- Communication skills: Helping children express their thoughts and participate in discussions.
- Confidence: Encouraging children to ask questions, share opinions and engage actively in learning.
- Enjoyment of learning: Helping children discover reading as an enriching activity beyond compulsory schoolwork.
The objective is not simply to distribute books.
It is to help children develop a meaningful relationship with reading — one that can strengthen their wider educational experience.
Why Developing a Reading Culture Matters
Reading plays an important role in learning across the school curriculum.
As children progress through their education, they increasingly depend on reading comprehension to understand instructions, interpret information and engage with subjects such as mathematics, science, social studies and history.
A child who develops strong reading habits gains opportunities to explore knowledge beyond the immediate classroom environment.
Reading can encourage independent thinking, stimulate curiosity and support the development of communication and comprehension skills.
For TARDIO, promoting a reading culture is therefore an important part of supporting basic education.
The organisation believes that children should not only have access to books but should also be encouraged to read, understand, question, discuss and enjoy what they discover.
Building Continuity Beyond One-Off Educational Interventions
The Back-to-School Outreach and the TARDIO Book Club initiative are connected by a shared educational vision.
The outreach addresses immediate challenges by helping children access essential educational materials.
The Book Club initiative seeks to provide continuity by encouraging regular reading, comprehension, discussion and engagement with learning.
Together, these programmes reflect TARDIO’s belief that meaningful educational support should extend beyond occasional donations.
A child may receive exercise books and writing materials at the beginning of a school term, but developing a lasting interest in education requires encouragement and opportunities that continue throughout the learning journey.
TARDIO therefore aims to strengthen relationships with schools, teachers, parents, communities, volunteers and supporters.
These partnerships are important in creating learning environments where children can develop confidence, discover their abilities and cultivate lasting reading habits.
The organisation’s wider ambition is to help ensure that educational interventions create opportunities for continued development rather than ending with the distribution of materials.
Looking Ahead: Expanding the TARDIO Book Club Initiative
With the completion of the 2026 Back-to-School Outreach in Aba and Amawom, TARDIO is turning its attention towards strengthening and expanding its educational programmes.
The next phase will focus on:
- Strengthening the existing TARDIO Book Club initiative in Umuahia, encouraging continued participation and regular reading activities.
- Establishing Book Clubs in three additional schools that have expressed readiness to participate during the first term.
- Exploring opportunities to extend the Book Club programme to more schools and communities.
- Promoting inclusive participation, with deliberate consideration for children with disabilities and those facing educational disadvantages.
- Building partnerships with schools, communities, volunteers and supporters to sustain educational activities.
- Mobilising educational resources, including books, learning materials and financial contributions, to support future interventions.
Through these efforts, TARDIO hopes not only to reach more children but also to deepen the educational value of every programme it undertakes.
The organisation remains committed to its vision of supporting basic education and helping disadvantaged children access opportunities for a better future.
How You Can Support TARDIO’s Educational Programmes
Sustaining educational initiatives requires collective effort.
TARDIO welcomes support from individuals, organisations, educational institutions, community groups and other partners who share its commitment to basic education.
Support can take different forms, including:
- Book donations: Contributing suitable children’s books and reading materials to support the TARDIO Book Club initiative.
- Educational materials: Providing exercise books, writing materials, school bags and other essential learning resources.
- Volunteering: Offering time, skills and experience to support reading activities and educational outreach.
- Partnerships: Collaborating with TARDIO to expand educational opportunities in schools and communities.
- Financial contributions: Supporting the implementation and sustainability of educational programmes.
Every meaningful contribution can help create opportunities for children who might otherwise struggle to access basic educational resources.
TARDIO believes that supporting a child’s education is an investment in that child’s future and, ultimately, in the wider community.
A Lasting Educational Impact
The completion of the Back-to-School Outreach in Aba and Amawom marks another important step in TARDIO’s commitment to fostering basic education.
The programme has reached approximately 257 pupils, including children with disabilities, while reinforcing the need for continued educational engagement.
However, the organisation’s vision extends beyond the immediate achievements of this outreach.
TARDIO seeks to create opportunities through which children can develop confidence, strengthen their reading abilities and discover the value of learning.
The distinction between providing immediate support and nurturing long-term educational development remains central to this vision.
A child who receives educational materials has been supported for the school term. A child who develops the habit of reading may carry that benefit for life.
This is the philosophy guiding TARDIO’s commitment to combining practical educational assistance with initiatives that encourage continued learning.
The organisation extends its sincere appreciation to the participating schools, teachers, communities, supporters, volunteers and everyone who contributed to the success of the 2026 Back-to-School Outreach.
Together, we can continue helping children access education, develop confidence and discover the joy of learning.
